This division of the Directorate is entrusted with the following
responsibilities/works:
National Sample Survey (NSS).
NSS is essential for any country/region as it informs us about the growth
across different sectors while highlighting the demographics that need
distinctive resources. Under National Sample Survey (NSS), surveys in
diverse fields are conducted on regular basis at National/State/UT level. The
data on various Socio-Economic indicators employing scientific sampling
methods is being collected from households. Jammu and Kashmir also
participates in these surveys on equal matching share basis. DES-J&K
collects the data for the surveys through its field functionaries i.e. District
Statistics Evaluation Officer on regular basis on the subject allotted. The
results are derived on state as well as District level.
Annual Survey of Industries (ASI).
Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) is the principal source of industrial
statistics. It provides statistical information to assess and evaluate,
objectively and realistically, the changes in the growth, composition and
structure of organized manufacturing sector comprising activities related to
manufacturing processes, repair services, gas and water supply and cold
storage. The survey is being conducted annually under the statutory
provisions of the Collection of Statistics (COS) Act, 2008 (as amended in
2017) and the rules framed there under in 2011. In exercise of power
conferred by sub section-(1) of section 4 of the collection of Statistics Act-
2008, “Statistics Officer” is being appointed by State Government for the
collection of statistics regarding Annual Survey of Industries.
Support for Statistical Strengthening (SSS)-Scheme.
The Support for Statistical Strengthening (SSS) is an on-going Central
Sector, sub-scheme of Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation
which aims to improve the statistical capacity and operations of state
statistical systems for collecting, compiling and disseminating reliable
official statistics. SSS is implemented through the State Directorates of
Economics & Statistics, as per the approved activities/targets/outputs
detailed out in the State’s specific MoUs signed between the Govt. of India
and respective States/UTs. Implementation of recommendations of
Technical Groups / Bodies for filling up existing and expected / emerging
data gaps, Data quality and efficiency improvement measures including
State/UT specific surveys are to be conducted under this scheme.
